Course Overview

Judges and legal professionals increasingly rely on clinicians to inform decisions affecting infants and young children involved in child welfare cases. Yet many clinicians receive little training in how to effectively communicate attachment science, trauma, and clinical formulation within legal settings. This session explores how Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP) clinicians can partner with courts, guardians ad litem (GALs), and multidisciplinary teams to advocate for the best interests of young children. Faculty will address the intersection of substance use, trauma, and parenting; clarify the distinct and overlapping roles of stakeholders in child welfare cases; and share strategies for effectively translating infant mental health principles into courtroom and case planning contexts. Participants will leave with practical tools to strengthen cross-system collaboration and improve outcomes for child welfare-involved families.
